People say it started in Las Vegas. I don’t know. I heard what happens there stays there. For some reason people think everything spreads from east to west and that the west coast is just on this long vacation where the sun goes to sleep and fritz about. We’ve got our own version of cutting edge out here is ‘Cali’ where the kids come up from underground like gutter flowers and beach grown weeds, unfertilized seeds grown wild and unteeming frothing centers of some different styles of greed.
So, who knows where things ‘start’ sometimes. But this thing everyone’s ‘on’ about… That things are different, these days. The hot summer, one of the hottest on record. 1996, it’s one of those years. People are so subconscious that it becomes obvious. Like flip the two 9’s in 1996 and you get 1-666, it’s not that big a deal. And then we’re on the verge of the millenium, and everyone’s a freak enough as it is.
But people say something has come unglued, or like they’re living a little less with themselves and more in some kind of opera with dramatic swells and sweeps… and on the coast we get the worst of eddies and whirlpools because when we get forced to the wall there’s nowhere else to go but… deep.
So when I heard about this ‘vortex’, between San Francisco and LA… at first I wanted to see it… but then, it seemed all too real. Like, you hear about these big movements, like, everybody’s doing this new drug or into this new music scene, but when everyone YOU know is into it, and maybe you were there at the scene when it broke, you realize that the future isn’t coming at you from afar, but it’s all around you too.
But, we decided we would go. People heading into the space between, or some lost interstate where things were strange and other things seemed possible. It almost sounded like… something had broken through… but that’s almost puerile to talk about. This was more oceanic, and absolving… and dark… deep… different…
Something one must see for oneself.
We would go. We had to see. We knew that much.
